Two blocks over, three hundred seats
Chris Mazzilli and Michael Reisman opened Gotham Comedy Club at 34 West 22nd Street on May 10, 1996, and opening night featured Paul Provenza, Mike Royce, Sarah Silverman and Dave Chappelle1, 2. In 2006 it moved two blocks northwest, to a $2.5 million room seating 300 in a 1929 building next to the Hotel Chelsea, and Comedy Central began recording there1, 3, 4. Our listing still had the old address, so anyone chasing our no-bad-seat promise was two blocks off.
Brothers Chris and Steven Mazzilli have run it together since 20052. Jerry Seinfeld filmed his documentary Comedian there, and Dave Chappelle and Lewis Black are among the comics who have played it1, 5. It's still at 208 West 23rd Street, with shows on the calendar for October 20266.
The old room on 22nd Street became the Metropolitan Room, a cabaret, from May 2006 until it closed there in September 20173, 7.
