History
A tavern, with a Michelin star
Zagat's voters named Gramercy Tavern the most popular restaurant in New York seven times between 2003 and 2015, which in this town is a long time to stay popular1. Danny Meyer and chef Tom Colicchio opened it in July 19941.
In the fall of 2006, with the restaurant 12 years old, Michael Anthony took over the kitchen, succeeding Colicchio, who had left to start Craft2. The New York Times gave it three stars in 2007, and the James Beard Foundation honored it or its chef in 2008, 2012 and 20152.
People stay. Juliette Pope looked after the wine for close to 20 years, and by the time Justin Timsit replaced her in 2016 the list ran to 600 selections3. Anthony, now Meyer's partner, is still in the kitchen 20 years after he arrived, and by DiningOut's account "happier than ever"1, 2.
It's still at 42 East 20th Street, with a Michelin star and, in 2026, a place on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list1, 4, 5. Its Tavern room keeps tavern hours, every day from 11:30 in the morning to 11 at night5.
