Overview

Tourists looking to score, drunk women dancing on the bar,  batenders who trade flirtation for drinks, shots ordered by the dozen, and an occasional bared breast. Sounds awful right? The strange thing is we've really only ever had a good time here.

History

A million bras and one set of antlers

In 2002 the Village Voice took inventory: nothing but a massive bar, a jukebox, and a set of antlers buried under a million brassieres, which made it about as straight-ahead a place to drink as you'll find1.

Hogs and Heifers took over 859 Washington Street from Howley's, the market's legendary saloon, which had operated there for 50 years1. The owner's husband started the bar in 1992, and the two owned it together until his death in 19972. We once listed every reason it should have been awful, then admitted we'd only ever had a good time there.

It closed for good in August 2015, after more than 20 years on Washington Street, because the landlord wanted to raise the rent to $60,0002.
