History
Fifteen years, then a 99-year lease
Chelsea Grill's 15 years on Eighth Avenue ended in August 2006, when Phil Alotta pulled down the heavy metal gate, with an auction of the contents to follow1. It was called a major hangout for heterosexuals, though Alotta said his customers were a 50/50 mix of gays and straights1. Centaur Properties had taken a 99-year lease on the property, and a six-story residential building with upscale retail was slated for most of the block1. A buyout and help finding a space on Spring Street for a new Riposo wine bar persuaded Alotta to go, and his staff, many of them there for the whole run, moved to his Chelsea Grill of Hell's Kitchen and Riposo 46 on Ninth Avenue1.
