Overview

Sasha Petraske conceived NYC's cocktail craze, and now he's aborting it. The only thing that you'll be able to persuade him to mix into your drink at his latest bar is ice, and even that's viewed with suspicion. At least you'll get your drink fast.

History

Absinthe between the graffiti

White Star's original drinks policy would fit on a coaster: beer, wine and straight spirits, chiefly absinthe1. Sasha Petraske of Milk and Honey opened it in 2008 in the former King Size, a narrow hip-hop bar covered in graffiti murals, and hung the dim Moroccan lanterns that gave it its name1, 2. Our listing accused the man behind the city's cocktail craze of ending it: the only thing he'd mix into your drink was ice, and even that he viewed with suspicion.

In January 2010 Petraske announced a wine and food program3, and by April he had abandoned his opening concept4. In August 2011 the space was up for lease5, and in March 2012 the operators of Lo-Fi, a bar and restaurant, described their plans for it6.

Since 2013 the address has been Clockwork, where graffiti and stickers cover nearly every inch, ceiling included7, 8, 9.
