Overview
There is no door more exclusive and no shows more outrageous than the ones at this intimate vintage theatre.
History
Twenty years of grand dramatic fashion
The Box opened in late 2006 with a live seven-piece orchestra and a celebrity "board of advisers" that included Rachel Weisz and Josh Lucas, and it was instantly one of the hottest clubs in New York1. We said there was no door more exclusive and no shows more outrageous, which in this city takes some doing.
It marked its tenth anniversary in 2017 in grand dramatic fashion, as a cabaret-style theater should2. In early 2020 the governor's executive order forced it to close as part of the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic3.
It came back: a show was listed there for September 25, 2026, and it still gives its address as 189 Chrystie Street, between Rivington and Stanton4, 5.
