Overview

There's a strict door at this downtown bar for the preppy set. If you went to Vanderbilt, Trinity, or Princeton you might want to mention it. If your daddy knows someone that there daddy knows that might help to. Otherwise your best bet is to mention how big a fan you are of the band Vampire Weekend and smile your best Oxford smile.

History

From a preppy door to palm-tree wallpaper

When we listed it, Bella's kept a strict door for the preppy set, and our advice was to mention Vanderbilt, Trinity or Princeton or, failing that, your love of Vampire Weekend, and smile your best Oxford smile. By 2010 it had been rebooted as Southside, a ritzy room going for a British Colonial look with bamboo wainscoting and faded palm-tree wallpaper, so the Oxford smile finally had a room to match1, 2. In June 2017 came word that Southside, at 1 Cleveland Place, would close before the month was out2. Ketchy Shuby, a restaurant that gives its address as 406 Broome Street, now has a speakeasy lounge downstairs3.
