A membership card or a velvet tongue
Getting onto the roof at 60 Thompson took a membership card or a velvet tongue, and from Thursday through Sunday it took both1, 2. The reward, by one account, was as good a reason to avoid Hamptons traffic as you can find1.
The hotel was Jason Pomeranc's first, opened in 2001, and its rooftop bar, A60, followed in 20021, 3. The velvet rope held: when the roof opened for the 2008 season, anyone who wasn't a hotel guest or holding an access card was, as one report put it, ostensibly screwed2. When we listed it, we called it one of the best rooftops in Manhattan.
60 Thompson turned out to be the Soho hotel that started it all: the Sixty Collective was later born as an homage to it3. A60 still sits atop the hotel, now called SIXTY Soho, high above Thompson Street, and its own page still calls it an exclusive rooftop terrace2, 4. At last look it was closed for the season, the only kind of closing a rooftop is supposed to have4.
