Overview

This dimly lit Christopher Street bar packs with a hugely diverse crowd of tourists and locals of all ages and ethnicities.

History

Three decades and one in-demand pool table

The Hangar opened on June 25, 1993, when Maurice Cassidy and his partner Wayne Cato took over a space in Christopher House, a seven-story building from 1904, that had been Christopher's, an LGBTQ-friendly restaurant1, 2. For 30 years it was an unassuming Christopher Street dive and a sanctuary, especially for older gay Black men, with go-go dancers and a pool table that was one of its biggest draws1. In 2012 the Village Voice named it Best Gay Bar for All Races3, and we'd already noticed a crowd as mixed as any on Christopher Street.

It closed for good on January 10, 20241. Michael Musto's verdict: the rent went up too much1.

In September 2025 Eytan Sugarman, owner of the White Horse Tavern, signed a ten-year lease, and on December 16 he and Will Makris opened Dandelion, a cocktail bar, in the space2, 4, 5.
