Overview

Just far enough from Bedford Ave to have retained its soul, Stain is a low key art bar supporting local artists and hosting a popular craft night -  PAINTstain "talent optional".

A low key "artists bar," Stain remains true to a Williamsburg ethos that disappeared about 10 years ago. It's relaxed, friendly and a strong supporter of the local artist community - the kind of neighborhood bar where people stop in to say hello to their friends when they walk by. Exposed brick walls, comfy couches, board games and candles make for the perfect hangout.

Why you should go

  • PAINTstain, the low-key "talent optional" crafts night is a ton of fun.
  • The drink menu is all New York, boasting 20 NY State wines, 15 New York beers, and Brooklyn Cream Soda.
  • The huge garden is a smoker's paradise in the summer.

What you should know

  • None of the musicians here get paid by the bar, so if you're digging it drop a few bucks in the tip jar.
  • If you want, add your own touch to the 12ft mural in the back.

History

Talent optional, lease required

Our listing called Stain a low-key art bar just far enough from Bedford Avenue to have kept its soul, with a craft night, PAINTstain, where talent was optional. In May 2009, five years after its founder opened it1, came word that Stain would close after failing to renew its lease1. The blame went to the landlord and the economy1.
