Overview

Fantastic blintzes, borcht, latkes, and vodka tonics make this 24-hour diner and Avenue A old-timer a neighborhood favorite.

History

Blintzes, borscht and a vodka tonic

We praised the blintzes, the borscht and the vodka tonics in the same breath, which was the whole point of a place called Odessa Cafe and Bar. It had opened on Avenue A in 1965, and in 1994 it expanded into the restaurant space next door at 119 Avenue A1.

The bar half closed on Saturday night, August 31, 2013, after a 50 percent rent increase1.

The bar's old room is now a pub, St. Dymphna's, at 117 Avenue A2.
