Same bar, now McMahon's Public House

Checked October 15, 2026.

Overview

This dimly lit, heavy drinking bar has been a Park Slope fixture since 1931. It was also once Elliot Smith's favorite hang out when he lived nearby. It now attracts a mix of young and old regulars brought together by a shared love of drinks cheap and hard.

History

Cheap, hard, and no draft lines

We had it as a Park Slope fixture since 1931, but a local history says O'Connor's was founded in 1934, on Fifth Avenue between Bergen and Dean Streets1. It stayed essentially unchanged, without so much as a draft beer line, until owner Mike Maher began renovations in 2011 and turned it into McMahon's Public House1. McMahon's Public House is still at 39 Fifth Avenue2.
