Overview

A rusted bicycle hanging from a wall serves as the only sign for this hidden bar and café. There are few (perhaps no) more attractive and unique interior spaces in the burrough - an idealized Parisian Café crammed into the narrow corner of a warehouse.
A rusted bicycle hanging from a wall serves as the only sign for this hidden bar and café. There are few (perhaps no) more attractive and unique interior spaces in the burrough - an idealized Parisian Café crammed into the narrow corner of an apartment block in the shadow of the J-M tracks. Bare bulbs hang from the ceiling. Drafts are poured from handles lovingly created from spare bicycle parts. Light streams in through the window as they serve brunch in the morning. Places like this are the reason people fall in love with New York City.

Why you should go

  • Enjoying a Belgian ale with listening to live jazz in the unique space it only takes a little imagination that you're in Paris left bank.
  • The brunch menu includes a unique pancake shaped into a bowl and filled with heaven. Failing to order it is tragedy in the making.

What you should know

  • The movie Eat this New York is a documentary about the launch of Moto (available on Netflix).
  • The date cake is so named because it is made with dates, but it is also perfect for shaing. It comes smothered in caramel sauce and crème fraiche. Among patrons it is the subject of relentless adoration bordering on obsession.

History

The bicycle was the only sign

Our old review said a rusted bicycle hanging from a wall was the only sign for this hidden bar and café in the shadow of the J train: an idealized Parisian café crammed into the narrow corner of a warehouse. Cafe Moto, at 394 Broadway, closed in late July 2016 after 14 years in business1, 2. What took its place, we couldn't find.
