History
It crossed the street once, in 1947
When we listed it, we said Montero's opened in 1947, which is actually the year it crossed the street into a new building1. The Monteros had opened a bar at 56 Atlantic Avenue in 19391.
When the docks closed in the 1970s, the sailors left and the rents started going up1. The décor had other admirers. Twiggy, the face of Swinging London, posed alongside its kitsch1, and one night in 1988 a man named Lago came home from Montero, began to write, and didn't stop for 20 years1.
The Pincus brothers were set to take over in March 2026, promising they were "keeping Montero, Montero": the décor, the cheap beer and the karaoke would remain2. It's still at 73 Atlantic Avenue2. On a Friday in 2026, at around six in the evening, five people were having a drink1; a few hours later the dive would be packed for karaoke, which runs Thursday through Sunday1.
