Overview

Like it's sister bar Sophie's on 5th Street, Mona's is one of the last truly great East Village dives. It inspires rabid loyalty but offers little more than cheap pints and a generous pour, but in this rapidly gentrifying hood it's a rare and precious thing.

History

The dive where the heavyweights sit in

When we listed it, we said Mona's offered little more than cheap pints and a generous pour, which somehow left out the music. Traditional Irish sessions had taken place there every Monday since the 1990s¹, and since June 2007 a band led by Dennis Lichtman has hosted a late-night trad-jazz jam there¹. Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jonathan Batiste, Nicholas Payton, Chris Thile and Anat Cohen are among the heavyweights who have sat in¹. Mona's Hot Five was booked at 224 Avenue B for 9pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2026².
