History
Opened on Halloween, reopened with charcuterie
Henrietta Hudson is a West Village lesbian bar that's older than most of its regulars, as one travel guide puts it1. When Cubbyhole moved out of the space in 1990, Cannistraci took it over and opened Henrietta Hudson the next year, on Halloween2.
In March 2020, before the authorities ordered businesses to shut, Cannistraci closed the bar and resolved to use the pause to transform the historic space3. Fifteen months later it welcomed people back to a club reimagined as a lounge, with sitting areas and plates of charcuterie to go with the dance floor3. Its owners rebranded it a "Queer Human Bar Built by Lesbians," to reach younger LGBTQ people who defy labels of sexual orientation and gender identity3.
