Overview

A divey saloon providing welcome respite from the marauding throngs of St Marks for over 30 years.

History

A refuge from St Marks, now for dogs

For 42 years the Grassroots Tavern was where you went to get away from St Marks Place without leaving it1. Its building was landmarked in 1971 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 19822.

In January 2016 Klosed Properties paid about $5.6 million for the building3. The next year the owner decided to sell the business, and the Grassroots closed after service on New Year's Eve, in the early hours of January 1, 20181, 4.

A new owner planned another bar for the space4. In August 2018 that plan was "moving forward, albeit at an agonizingly slow pace"; it never opened, and five years after the Grassroots closed the space was still empty4, 5.

In November 2023 the space finally reopened as Manhattan Pawffice, a dog daycare and boarding business2.
