History
An arts cafe that started out dry
We listed it as a bar, but An Beal Bocht started out in 1991 as a small cafe that served only non-alcoholic drinks, a place for artists to gather and perform1. It eventually took over the storefront next door, and its commitment to the arts grew with it1. Its own history counts the Poor Mouth Theatre Company, founded in March 2010 by Don Creedon, Stephen Smallhorne and Colin Broderick1.
It's still at 445 West 238th Street, open from 11am to 2am Monday through Friday2. In 2026 the program still ran to a Tuesday open mic, what one guide calls the Bronx's longest-running Irish session on Sundays, and the Riverdale Jazz Series on the last Wednesday3.
