History
A German pilsner hall turned Irish pub
During Prohibition, the bar now called The Punch Bowl masqueraded as an ice cream parlor1. It had begun as a German pilsner hall called Buckeye's, with a back entrance that was still there in 2011 and a beer garden that wasn't1, and its ceramic floor dates to about 19011.
When it reopened after Prohibition, it was as an Irish pub1. It was renamed The Punch Bowl in the 1960s1, and the Barry family took it over in 19791.
It's still at 5820 Broadway in the Bronx2. On Mondays it opens at 8am and closes at 4am3, which leaves a four-hour window for anyone hoping to find it shut.
