Overview

Well worth the hike from Wall Street this Irish pub is a strong choice for after work drinks. The kitchen is head and shoulders above pub par and the crowd is a nice mix of two disparate groups, those who work downtown and those who live there.

History

Born on St. Patrick's Day, reborn for another

Mena Maguire and her husband Tommy, an Irish-born couple, opened the bar on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 19951. It wasn't their first: they had owned Ryan's Sports Bar on Gold Street, and came to Cliff Street when they lost that lease1. Both bars are named after their son1.

When we listed it, we called it well worth the hike from Wall Street, with a kitchen head and shoulders above pub par and a crowd that mixed the people who work downtown with the people who live there. Early on the morning of February 24, 2010, a three-alarm fire tore through the basement, gutted the ground-floor bar and damaged the three floors of apartments above2.

The bar rebuilt and reopened in time to host St. Patrick's Day 20113. It had opened on the holiday, and it came back for it1, 3. It's still at 28 Cliff Street, now called Ryan Maguire's Bar & Restaurant, and a longtime neighborhood favorite1.
