History
A hundred thousand welcomes, three taps
"Cead Mile Failte" reads the sign above the bar, Gaelic for "100,000 welcomes," and in 2010 Time Out took it as an invitation to down $3 Foster's drafts on the cozy back patio1. Kathleen McCarthy bought the bar in the mid-1980s from a Brooklyn family, and by 2012, when the Times's Cate Doty wrote a loving portrait of the place, Kathleen's husband, Buddy, came in every day to clean2. In 2014 Brooklyn Magazine counted wood paneling, a decent jukebox, a karaoke night and three taps, usually pouring Bud, Bud Light and Killian's3, 4. In 2022 karaoke was still on Saturday nights, with live music on the way5.
