History
Named for a son who loved sports
To most locals, Eddie Jr. Sports Lounge was empanadas, a dominoes table, big-screen sports and Spanish chatter1. To its owner, Eddie Zambrana Sr., it was a lifeline after he lost his son on 9/111.
Zambrana had gotten his son, Eddie Jr., a job in the Twin Towers, and he blamed himself1. In 2005 he opened the bar with his son-in-law, Hugo Garcia, as a tribute to the young man1. "My son loved sports and he loved to eat," he said, "so we named it after him"1. Old photographs and mementos of Eddie Jr., who was 24 when he died, decorated the bar1.
By 2013, as rents rose, local customers were leaving South Williamsburg and a nightlife strip was filling the blocks nearby1. Still, the barbecues, the beans and rice and the soccer on the big screens drew regulars from across the city1.
We listed it as plain Eddies Sports Lounge; directories have it at 40 Marcy Avenue as Eddie Jr's Sports Lounge, the name that says who it's for2, 3.
