Overview

Cheap pitchers, free hot dogs and free full sized pool tables. Oh, yeah, and randomly the bartenders wear bikinis. It might even be reason enough to go to Hell's Kitchen.

History

A life-size hippo a block from Times Square

A block from Times Square sat a Port Authority holdout with a life-size hippopotamus head1, 2. At Port 41, 355 West 41st Street, Time Out found rowdy workmen and bikini-clad bartenders1. We said the cheap pitchers, free hot dogs and free pool might be reason enough to go to Hell's Kitchen; we forgot to mention the hippo. The address had once been home to the Savoy3.

The bar was later renamed Tobacco Road, and under the new name the Village Voice picked it as the best dive bar4, 5. In 2017 Tobacco Road closed owing its landlord $183,000 in back rent5.

By October 2022, Taylor Shubert, Daniel Nardicio, Samuel Benedict and Adam Klesh were planning Red Eye NY, a queer coffee bar and club, for the space6. It opened in 2023, and it serves coffee by day and runs a club at night, with drag and club events on its October 2026 calendar7, 8.
