Overview

The kind of place where a first time visitor is met with a round of introductions, unattended women are viewed with suspicion, and friendships are begun with the clip of a cigar.

History

Velvet, now a cocktail bar and event venue

When we listed it, Velvet was the kind of place where a first-time visitor got a round of introductions and friendships began with the clip of a cigar. In January 2013 the Department of Buildings ordered Velvet Lounge to vacate the space1, which left Williamsburg without what Eater called its only cigar lounge1. Today 174 Broadway is home to Velvet Brooklyn, which bills itself as a cocktail bar and event venue2.
