History
Flooded to the ceiling, back in seven months
In the fall of 2012 Hurricane Sandy blew the Paris Cafe's front doors off their hinges and flooded the place to the ceiling1. By the following May the bar was back open1. For a place that opened its doors in 1873, seven months was a hiccup1, 2.
The pandemic was harder. The cafe closed in May 2020 with a farewell that blamed no one but the outbreak of the virus: there was no way forward that made economic sense1, 2, 3.
It reopened in November 2021 under a new owner, with new outdoor seating and the same restored German Victorian bar and handsome brick walls3. The company behind it, which also owns Common Ground Bar in the Meatpacking District, has since built a late-night lounge, put out a new menu and revived the old bar2. It's at 119 South Street, which also answers to 119 Peck Slip4.
