History
A jazz room older than its name
For more than 20 years from the mid-1970s, this room was Augie's Jazz Bar, a lovably scruffy neighborhood dive1. Smoke Jazz & Supper Club opened in it on April 9, 19991. In July 2022, after a pause, Smoke reopened on the Upper West Side in an expanded space2, and in April 2024 it began a year-long 25th-anniversary celebration with a four-night run by NEA Jazz Master George Coleman3.
