History
One more Rob Roy for the road
Sir Harry's was billed as the bar where the Rob Roy was invented: a glittering Art Deco bar, once one of the best stocked in the city1. It sat inside the Waldorf Astoria, which opened on Park Avenue in 1931 as a 47-story limestone skyscraper2. In 2010 Time Out called it the clubbiest of the hotel's bars, all big mirrors, burled wood and African landscape paintings3.
It closed with the hotel in March 20171, when the Waldorf shut for a multiyear restoration that turned much of it into condominiums2, 4. On the last night the shelves were half emptied as revellers stayed for one more cocktail1.
The Waldorf reopened in July 2025 with 375 hotel rooms and 375 condos2. Cole Porter's piano was restored and moved to Peacock Alley, which came back as the hotel's bar and lounge2. The hotel's dining page lists Lex Yard, Peacock Alley and Yoshoku; the piano got its second act, and Sir Harry's didn't5.
