History

Wednesdays were for roller skates

Our listing called it an enormous warehouse where the crowd was always there to dance, except on Wednesdays, when it came to roller-skate. On Saturdays, we added, the Roxy was home to the biggest gay party in the city.

Steve Bauman, Richard Newhouse and Steve Greenberg founded the club at 515 West 18th Street1, and Gene DiNino acquired it in 19851.

It had one encore left: after a pause, it resumed operation once again on December 2, 20061, then closed permanently on March 10, 20071.

In September 2021, Lantern House luxury residential condominiums opened where the Roxy once stood1. No word on whether the amenities include a roller rink.
