History
Thirteen years as a grocery store
By the bar's own account, for the thirteen years of Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933, the bar at 287 Third Avenue was a grocery store1. It had first been established as a bar in 18951.
In 1964 the Purfield family, from Dublin and Galway, bought the business and named it Molly Malone's, and Stanley Franks designed it in the Tudor style it still wears1. In 1991 Peter O'Connell, from County Meath, took it over and renamed it Molly's Shebeen1. Four years later John Ronaghan, from County Monaghan, joined him, and the two managed it together1.
It's still at 287 Third Avenue, open from 11am to 4am, seven days a week1.
