History
One day short of St. Patrick's Day
Lady Gaga was a regular at Desmond's Tavern, and she performed at the Irish bar too1. The room, in a four-story building on Park Avenue South, had been home to bars since 19361. The Connolly family bought the bar in 1968 and ran it as Desmond's Tavern from 1990 on1.
The tavern closed a day before St. Patrick's Day, of all days, in March 20201. The pandemic prompted Hugh Connolly to consider renting out the space rather than running the bar himself1.
In August 2021 he leased the ground floor and basement to Istvan Nagy, who already owned two bars in the city, the Side Door gastropub in Midtown East and One Lenox in Lenox Hill1. Nagy planned a music venue, bar and restaurant there, still without a name, in 2,400 square feet1. So the room where Lady Gaga once performed was set to become a music venue in its own right1.
