Overview

Named for a type of sailing boat used in Galway Bay, this massive bi-level Irish pub has 36 taps, pool tables, a dart board, projection screen TV, and enough space to accommodate the entire fixed income department at Merrill Lynch.

History

Two floors, three names, one Draper Room

In 2009 we said the Galway Hooker had room for the entire fixed income department at Merrill Lynch; in numbers, that was 10,000 square feet near the Empire State Building, with two bars, pool tables and three private dining rooms1. It opened a four-story sister pub in the West Village in April 2010, and by December 2012 the midtown original was calling itself the Galway Pub2, 3. By 2015 the two floors had become 5th & Mad, a gastropub that takes its cues from Mad Men, with a Draper Room upstairs, and a reviewer called it a redux, of sorts, of the Galway Hooker4, 5. 5th & Mad is still there, with a New Year's Eve party already on sale for December 31, 20266.
