History
Three stories of history, one of retail
Before it was a nightclub, the building at Stillwell Avenue and the Bowery was a stage where, the Historic Districts Council said, Harpo Marx first performed with his brothers1. Fred Henderson had opened it around 1900 as a three-story brick music hall, and from 1926 to 1984 it housed the World of Wax Musee1.
In 2007 Velocity had the second floor, on the Bowery side1. It stayed until Thor Equities bought the building and evicted it1.
By April 2010 Thor had announced plans to tear the Henderson down and put up a one-story shopping mall1. Demolition of the Henderson and the Bank of Coney Island buildings began that October, expected to take 40 days2.
By 2015 the address, 3015 Stillwell Avenue, was a shop called Brooklyn Rock, in Thor's new retail building3.
